Now, if YOU want your teenage daughter climbing out the window in the middle of the night to go have sex with someone - go right ahead and give this book to your child, aged 8 to 12. Parents deserve to know what they're giving to their children.

There's no rating system applied to books (like there is with movies) and all we have is the advance warning of reviews on sites like Goodreads.

The author and publishing company chose to hide this from parents, who usually are the ones who buy books for their children. They deserve to know in advance that this book includes a lesbian relationship. I mentioned especially, Christian parents, because they usually care about what is in books their children read. I put my review here to let others know, this is not a good book for young children.

The inclusion of this tidbit of information about the sister in only the last chapter really hides it from the viewpoint of parents buying books for their children. This is inappropriate for a children's novel. doesn't even matter if the person is gay or not. They do not need to be shown this bad example of a teenager climbing out the window at night to go have an affair with another teenager. This is ostensibly a book written for children aged 8 to 12. however, I do not believe matters of sexuality in literature are appropriate for children. I spent 15 dollars on this book and spent hours reading it only to get to the last chapter where I found out this book isn't appropriate for Christian children. We want children to be entertained, amazed and inspired, not brainwashed. C'mon people - this book was intended for CHILDREN. I do hope the Newbery committee isn't just choosing books based on their political or social values instead of literary merit. It seemed to be tossed in there like a way to get 'politically correct' brownie points, and I guess the Newbery committee liked that since this book won the Newbery medal in 2021. I thought this was a lovely magical realism book and sad story about a grandmother's illness - until the last chapter when the author ruined it in one very short paragraph by suddenly declaring (view spoiler) which had absolutely nothing to do with the story. Not recommended for children in Christian families.
